Local Customer Focus Drives UK Growth for Handelsbanken
Handelsbanken, the relationship bank with a branch in Church Road, Tunbridge Wells, has credited another successful year of growth to the loyalty of its local branch customers.

The 140-year-old bank has published its annual results for 2011 (available at http://www.handelsbanken.co.uk) which reveal a 31 per cent increase in lending to UK individual and corporate customers, taking total UK lending to just over £8.5 billion. MoShang New Music “What Comes Around” Released As App For iPhone & Android Smartphones

MoShang had an idea that is bringing his music to the edge of the technological tide. The idea was to create an album that could remix itself on every listen and would never play through twice in exactly the same way. That idea is now a reality in the form of an app called “What Comes Around” for iPhone and Android smartphones. It also uses the smartphone’s microphone to allow listeners to mix in their unique environmental sounds.
MoShang is originally from South Africa, but the producer has been based in Taiwan for the better part of a decade. His music is best described as relaxing and energizing. The relaxing component comes from MoShang’s choice of instruments and chord progressions which are rooted in the tradition of downtempo electronica by artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister and Air. The energizing aspect comes from his fondness of hip-hop and broken beats that are sped up on this release almost into the terrain of dance music.
MoShang is both creative and prolific. He has composed and produced six previous albums and has released more than one hundred and thirty hours of original music by way of his Live Online Podcast. However, he faced a number of challenges in creating a musical app. The biggest challenge stemmed from the fact that he had no previous programming experience. He quickly discovered that he could garner his own teaching through the wealth of information and tutorials available for free on the web. Additionally, all of the software tools used on this project are available for free download online thanks to the generosity of the free software community.
Further challenges on the project included adapting his music to suit the requirements of an app. The faster tempo, for example, allowed for shorter musical samples that would result in a smaller download size for the app. Another challenge faced was translating some of the DJing tricks he acquired while producing his Live Online Podcast into code. It allows the music to remain interesting, even though it is based on a relatively small collection of musical samples.
MoShang’s main aim was to engage with current technology, and to make a modest contribution to the debate regarding the future of recorded music. Though it’s unlikely all albums will be made like this in the future, it does point to one direction albums could take. Ultimately, though, he wanted to create an album of music that sounds like it was made by a human, and not a machine.
“What Comes Around” is available as a fourteen song full version, as well as a five song free version. For Android smartphones, it is available as a stand-alone app in the Android Market. For iOS devices the album is available as a scene for the RjDj host app (a free download from the App Store).

Antique postcard and paper buyers and sellers enjoy two days of shopping, selling and trading. Thousands of pre-1940, original historic photos and postcards of towns and historical events are sorted alphabetically by town and priced individually, or in lots. “This is a fun show for our vendors and customers. Vendors are bringing original historical photographs of Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Civil War, Western American, Route 66, mining, sports, political, maps, Native Americans, rodeo, movie, railroadiana, Oklahoma and Indian Territory, Victorian era, Kewpies, 101 Ranch, Border War and thousands of other topical and state view postcards. Other historical paper memorabilia and ephemera are also for sale.
“Early bird” admission starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, and is $5, per person, and covers both days. Regular admission is $3 per person, available beginning at 10 a.m.; it too covers both days.

MSI Global Feelgood Index Shows Confidence Building in North America, but Uncertainties in Eurozone Still Pose Threat to Recovery
MSI’s latest business confidence survey shows some regional variations in terms of business sentiment compared to the report of November 2011, but while the worst may possibly be over, at the start of 2012, the outlook for the global economy continues to give cause for concern.

Research into levels of business confidence worldwide from the leading international association of professional services firms MSI Global Alliance shows that recovery in many of the major Western economies is being hampered by continued strains in the Eurozone.
“The year ahead will be challenging for many regions and countries across the globe, with the Eurozone economy as a whole expected to go into a mild recession,” warned Joe Nellis, Professor of International Management Economics at Cranfield School of Management.
“This will have a direct impact on the major exporting countries, especially China, Japan and Germany. This year is likely to see the bottom of what has become known as the ‘Great Recession’ – but many uncertainties will still pose a threat to the path of recovery thereafter.”
The MSI Global Feelgood Index, which uses weighted averages of seven key business performance indicators, indicates that the balance of confidence remains virtually neutral at the global level (+0.10). However, over the last three months, there has been a notable upturn in the balance of confidence in the North American region (from +0.04 to +0.22). This supports the emerging view that the region is near to or at the bottom of the economic cycle and that a modest recovery may well be under way. This view is supported by the latest forecasts from the IMF for the region, with GDP in the USA expected to grow by 1.8% in 2012.
This is tempered by the balance of business confidence in general across Western Europe remaining in negative territory (-0.04). James Mendelssohn, MSI’s Chief Executive, comments: “This is not surprising in the light of the sovereign debt crisis that continues to build momentum in some Euro member states – particularly Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy.” In contrast, and unexpectedly, the balance of business confidence in Eastern Europe is positive (at +0.39).
The survey also shows that North Americans are generally more optimistic, particularly with regards to the outlook for their companies’ sales pipeline (+0.35), whereas in Western Europe few have confidence in the prospects for strong company sales (-0.06).
Over the last three months there has been a slight downturn in the MSI Feelgood Index for the Australia/New Zealand region (from +0.03 to -0.03), more or less matching that of Eastern Asia (-0.05) and the Indian region (-0.01).
The general level of business confidence remains positive in Latin America and directly in tandem with the +0.22 balance noted earlier for North America.
Finally, the balance of optimism in the Middle East and North Africa as well as Southern Africa regions has dampened, according to the latest MSI Feelgood Index (from +0.33 to +0.07 and from +0.22 to +0.04 respectively) – but is still in positive territory.
Nellis concludes: “The IMF, in its most recent World Economic Outlook report, now expects the global economy to grow by 3.25 per cent in 2012; this is down significantly from the 4 per cent predicted just a few months ago. The findings of MSI’s latest Global Feelgood Index show that the year ahead will be challenging for many regions and countries.”

Each quarter, the MSI Global Feelgood Index surveys business owners and managers in over 100 countries on their levels of optimism regarding seven key areas of business: sales pipeline, profit margins, cash flow, spending on investment capital, staff numbers, spending on marketing and advertising, and spending on staff training and welfare.

The Girl Scout Daisy Troop #624 at Parker’s North Star Academy selected the Cat Care Society (CCS) Nibbles & Kibbles Cat Food Bank for its annual community service project. The announcement is made by Diane Stoner, president of Cat Care Society, who says, “The donations filled most of the lower level meeting room area at the shelter and included cat food, litter, cat bed and other cat supplies. The Scouts even made toys for the Cat Care Society shelter kitties.”
According to Stoner: “Nibbles & Kibbles provides food and cat litter for cats whose owners cannot provide food and litter for their pets because of a temporary financial setback. By providing temporary help for low-income families with pets, CCS helps owners avoid neglecting or abandoning their pets due to financial concerns. We’re so very grateful for the Daisy Troop’s support.”
Mary C. Tate , troop leader, learned about Cat Care Society and Nibbles & Kibbles in the Girl Scout newsletter for troop leaders. Making the delivery of two carloads of donations were troop members Caitlin Tate (Mary’s daughter) and India Choudhury. Cookie Chairperson Caroline Choudhury, India’s Mom, assisted with the delivery. The girls also toured the shelter and Cat Clinic during their visit.
It All Starts With A Collection Box
CCS Volunteer Coordinator Jane Dorsey says, “It all starts with a collection box and a successful Nibbles & Kibbles Food Drives take off from there. Our theme is “Fighting Feline Famine” and we believe working with the Scouts provides a great educational experience, while at the same time serving an important unmet need in the community.”
